Mybeautyluv: Toni, why did you choose Grethe as one of your sheroes this Women’s Month?
She’s a true artist, with a quirky, honest realness. Her Suikerbos Jewellery designs are soft, delightful, unique and it captures the heart of South Africa’s beauty.
A simple, uncomplicated soul, Grethe is a superb listener, has a great sense of
humour and is a shining example of trusting in yourself and the process.
She inspires me with her creative zest and her ability to remain true to herself.
A bit about you
Name: Grethe de Waal
We are heavily influenced by our surroundings, and having travelled with Suikerbos
quite a bit, there are many landscapes stories captured in our ranges - the flat lands
of the Free State, the rumble tumble of Jo’burg and, finally, our new sea home here
in Simon’s Town.
Mybeautyluv: Which women have empowered you? How?
This is a complex question for me as I do not really think of any one individual or gender that really had a more significant
influence on me more than the other.
Empowerment is everywhere and comes in all shapes and sizes. That being said,
now in my later life, living an unconventional lifestyle by not having children and
the conventional route.
The tiny handful of woman I have met who have gone the same route has given me major confidence and
acceptance of my "weirdness". I salute them all!
Mybeautyluv: Which men have empowered you?
Oh, hands down my two older brothers! We lost our father in our teens, and they
kept me raw and real ever since.
Mybeautyluv: How you empower/support women?
Growing up as the only girl and the youngest sibling, I remember a lot of my
childhood chores being traditional ‘female’ acts. I made the lemonade, my brothers
mowed the lawn. I washed the dishes, they fixed the bicycle tyres.
Looking at my life as an adult, I cringe at the missed education that my brothers so forcefully received.
I think that I, like many other women, grew up thinking so many things were "man
things". They were not. These were incredibly valuable life hacks that I suddenly
needed when I was out there on my own.
I encourage my female staff members to not shy away from learning to use power
tools, giving them the confidence to be self-sufficient in the workshop.
I believe this spills over into their personal lives, empowering them to feel more comfortable handling the many manual curve balls of life.
Pick up those hammers, Ladies! WE’VE GOT THIS!
Mybeautyluv: What advice would you give a young woman starting her career?
Ask for help! it opens doors you couldn’t imagine, and creates networks of support that you would most definitely need later on.
Mybeautyluv: Any empowering slogan or message you’d like to share?
Jump and the net will appear. I have really lived my life on this.
Mybeautyluv: What are the most important values to create a more just and balanced world?
No matter how educated or high up in life you are, it has always only been YOUR experience. I think acknowledgement of this goes a long way.
There are so many stories out there...be quiet, ask, listen.. this method has enriched my life with tons of weird and wonderful people.
Mybeautyluv: What does success mean to you?
Nothing. Success, like happiness, is a constantly changing and evolving state of being. I feel successful the one day and inadequate the next… Just ride the wave with grace.
Mybeautyluv: How is self-care a part of your personal empowerment?
OMG skin!! I often wish I had taken better care of my skin in my younger days, It’s been a hard and
expensive journey fixing my skin. BUT I now realise the value of it! And when my skin looks good, I feel good.
Mybeautyluv: What do you do as your daily or nightly ritual?
SKIN. SKIN. SKIN… choose the right products, it’s important. My Beauty Luv has (tried and) tested products. Use them.
Mybeautyluv: Which product did you choose as your one must-have from My Beauty Luv?
Mybeautyluv: Now that you’ve used it, tell us about it…
Who doesn’t love luscious lashes? Well...me... if it means struggling with removers
at night to get it off, or sitting for an hour to get lash extensions.
I’m always a little sceptical when it comes to trying new make-up, as I don’t like
I was so pleasantly surprised by My Beauty Luv’s Beautique 3D Fiber Lashes.
It comes in a nifty little case to keep your items together. Application is simple,
results are fantastic, making your lashes look fuller and longer.
And, at the end of the day, it all washes away quick and easy with your facewash
To quote a friend who put it in simpler terms: " I WANIT!!"
